It’s always great to see old friends get some shine. Mario Desa and I used to trade back and forth drawing skate deck graphics and then graffiti from middle school through high school. His skills were always on point and blew me out of the water. He’s been tattooing now for awhile (at Great Lakes Tattoo) but just worked with 1xRun to drop a brand new print and as to be expected, it’s dope. Scoop it up quick cuz it’s on the cheap and in an edition of only 50 (as of this writing half have already been sold).

Get yours, here.

Artists We Dig: GoddoG http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/11/artists-we-dig-goddog/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=artists-we-dig-goddog http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/11/artists-we-dig-goddog/#comments Tue, 12 Nov 2013 19:14:34 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=4948 Hailing out of France comes a young artist (Flickr profile reads: “Young artist // no kids, no dog but a pretty woman, and a beautiful home”) armed with a fierce arsenal of geometric shapes and color. While most of his creations are living large, literally, on walls of buildings he also has the uncanny ability to transform them into prints that look dope framed on the wall of a living room. As many of us know, this transition doesn’t always translate very well with a lot of graffiti/muralist artists whose work only feels really right when it’s in a very specific urban environment. He’s got a little Doze Green, a little Kid Acne, a little Roa, and a whole bunch of his own style. If you’re digging any of these by any means you need to check out his Flickr (where all these photos are from) for a lot more, here.

Swampy lives a life that you or I could probably only sustain for the length of this video. Get a glimpse in this trippy, stream of conscious, train hopping, graffiti, art video diary provided by the illustrious Swamp Donkey. Illegal trouble all day.

Nelson Mandela Tribute By Phil Akashi http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/07/nelson-mandela-tribute-by-phil-akashi/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=nelson-mandela-tribute-by-phil-akashi http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/07/nelson-mandela-tribute-by-phil-akashi/#comments Mon, 22 Jul 2013 22:21:46 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=4376 mandela

Photo from Phil Akashi’s website

I’ve been wanting to do a tribute piece to Nelson Mandela for awhile now (the best idea I’ve had so far for a t-shirt is “A T-shirt Does No Justice To This Man’s Legacy”). Lucky for us, I’ve been beat to the punch in the tribute department. Artist Phil Akashi did a mural in Shanghai of the legend by donning boxing gloves and punching a wall 27,000 times with a Chinese/Taoist ink and the characters 自由/”Freedom.”

Read about the location, technique, and watch video @Good Magazine and the artist’s website.

The ever awe-inspiring and affable José Parlá has been a busy man lately, from his commissioned work for the Brooklyn Nets’ Barclay center to his collaborative work with French Photographer JR in Cuba (documented in book form, JR & José Parlá: Wrinkles of the City, Havana, Cuba) to his solo show now up at the Yuka Tsuruno Gallery in Tokyo. If you have a chance, definitely check it out cuz I can verify firsthand his work is much more amazing in real life where you can get dizzy trying to pick apart his density of layered script/tags. Peace to Ease/Inkheads.

More flicks of the show and his work with JR after the jump (via ArrestedMotion.com & JR-Art.net)…

Sofia Maldonado has a new solo show and is rocking some hard line, abstract, graffiti wildstyle influenced pieces.

She’s also awesome because she paints skate ramps, check them out here.

There’s a wall with Paebak on it. And if not, there’s a train or a light pole or some wind strewn trash. Taking the train through some small West Virginia town and boom, there’s a Paebak throwie trackside on the back of a shed. His style carries the fun and color of a demented circus or cartoon but also generally adheres to a pretty traditional graf letter form and readability. Most importantly, he’s up.

Matchbook Paintings- Joseph Martinez http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/03/matchbook-paintings-joseph-martinez/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=matchbook-paintings-joseph-martinez http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/03/matchbook-paintings-joseph-martinez/#comments Fri, 15 Mar 2013 17:00:07 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=3277 joseph martinez

Matchbooks have for one reason or another always been kind of an odd, kitschy collectors item. I suppose they’re like little mementos of all the bars/restaurants your seedy ass has patronized, like little trophies. Well, if you’re in SF you can go check out some matchbooks that are literally works of art. Public Barber Salon (571 Geary) is hosting a show by Joseph Martinez called A Little Piece of the Bay that is all oil paintings done on the insides of matchbooks. On top of that they’re of heroes and friends of his such as Sam FloresMike Giant, and Barry McGee. Collectables for sure.

Wang Yue’s “Meitu” Tree Hole Paintings http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/03/wang-yues-meitu-tree-hole-paintings/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=wang-yues-meitu-tree-hole-paintings http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/03/wang-yues-meitu-tree-hole-paintings/#comments Mon, 11 Mar 2013 17:39:23 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=3227 wangyue

wang-yue-tree-hole-paintings-6

Here’s something for a monday morning that, while being cute and adorable, is hard to scoff at. Wang Yue has taken to creating her art in the knots and tree holes around Shijiazhuang, capital city of Hebei Province. While art will always have a place on canvas, I think the culture as a whole gets elevated when it’s pushed forward and presented “outside of the box.” To me, technical skill has become less and less of a primary concern and creativity has really taken over. Granted you still gotta have some skills but we’ve already seen what the Masters have done and there’s plenty of people on the photorealistic tip. Wang Yue’s creativity is something I can actually feel.

It’d be really funny if she became as popular as Banksy and people started digging up the trees like they do with ripping his stencils off of walls. Then there could be a war between art thieves and the tree hugger army. I digress.
