Oddisee kills it and this song just wedges itself into your psyche and creeps around for awhile, it gets repeat and heavy rotation. One of the greats paying homage to one of the greatest…

And make sure to check out more of Oddisee’s music here.

Video of the Week: Atmosphere “Ain’t Nobody” http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/06/video-of-the-week-atmosphere-aint-nobody/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=video-of-the-week-atmosphere-aint-nobody http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/06/video-of-the-week-atmosphere-aint-nobody/#comments Thu, 13 Jun 2013 20:59:39 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=4116 via Mass Appeal

Here’s a pretty great video from Rhymesayers royalty, a little NSFW in a good way (but still tame enough to stay up on youtube.) Shout out to Robert Palmer’s “Simply Irresistible.”

A Song for the Weekend http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/05/a-song-for-the-weekend/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=a-song-for-the-weekend http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/05/a-song-for-the-weekend/#comments Fri, 31 May 2013 18:12:10 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=4012 Still ruminating over the new Aceyalone album that dropped this week. In the meantime here’s a more more sentimental joint from Z-trip featuring Aceyalone and Mystic (who disappeared after one album and I have no idea why.) As they say…”Everything Changes.”

Video of the Week- Aaradhna “Lorena Bobbitt” http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/05/video-of-the-week-aaradhna-lorena-bobbitt/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=video-of-the-week-aaradhna-lorena-bobbitt http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/05/video-of-the-week-aaradhna-lorena-bobbitt/#comments Wed, 15 May 2013 13:11:08 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=3789 This is just a great video for such a great song. Aaradhna is coming straight outta New Zealand and is belting out some classic soul/r&b (and a little rock steady) with her harsh but feminine modern touch. And the video’s pretty hilarious (directed by Tom Gould). I hate to make the comparison but she holds her own amongst Amy Winehouse and Adele all the while still making it her own. Check out more of her, hereBoom.

There’s something about this cover that just cuts deep. Enjoy suckers.

Which is why I am super stoked to be heading off to a hip hop conference today with her AND Pharoahe Monch! Two of the best in the game. In honor of that here’s her flipping Paul Simon’s “50 ways to leave your lover,” produced by M-boogie.

Song Of The Week: Cash Brown Vs. Styles P & Pharoahe Monch http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/03/cash-brown-styles-p-pharoahe-monch-last-man-standing-the-life-ayatollah-last-man-standing-the-life/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=cash-brown-styles-p-pharoahe-monch-last-man-standing-the-life-ayatollah-last-man-standing-the-life http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/03/cash-brown-styles-p-pharoahe-monch-last-man-standing-the-life-ayatollah-last-man-standing-the-life/#comments Wed, 13 Mar 2013 13:11:03 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=3252 IT’S A BAAAAATTLE!!! Both of these great songs use the same beat by Ayatollah. While the beat is actually so dope it stands to be in two separate songs you gotta imagine there’s some industry rule #4080 shadiness going on behind the double duty. Yep. Apparently record companies being shady extends to the independents as well. According to HipHop-Element.com Cash Brown and Ayatollah were both cut out of the loop before the instrumental got used with Styles and Pharoahe for ESPN. Without their consent the record company doubled down and doubled up, without their consent or need for it cuz, wait for it…contracts son, contracts. Sign one. No verbals. Cash Brown should have taken his own advice from his song “Pay Me.” That’s the life.

Song of the Week: El-P “Drones Over Brooklyn” http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/03/song-of-the-week-el-p-drones-over-brooklyn/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=song-of-the-week-el-p-drones-over-brooklyn http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/03/song-of-the-week-el-p-drones-over-brooklyn/#comments Wed, 06 Mar 2013 19:45:17 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=3191 I know, I know, too easy. But after all the reported sightings of a drone flying over Brooklyn/Queens just had to do it (Gawker, CNN, and from Vice’s Motherboard, “The FBI cut out that ‘unmanned aircraft’ business when it took to Twitter to do some witness recruiting. ‘Anyone with information on the #drone near #JFK yesterday can remain anonymous,’ the bureau tweeted, along with the phone number of a tipline.”). Besides it’s a great song.

Off of El-p’s album Cancer 4 Cure [Explicit].

Song of the Week, Quelle Chris- “RatShit” http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/02/song-of-the-week-quelle-chris-ratshit/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=song-of-the-week-quelle-chris-ratshit http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/02/song-of-the-week-quelle-chris-ratshit/#comments Wed, 13 Feb 2013 17:50:03 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=2985 Quelle Chris (Mello Music Group) reminds me of a more straight ahead hip hop version of Ninja Sonik; young, dumb, and fun. And it should go without saying that there’s no other way to take that but positive. Cuz “looking for work is work.” Now go make that ratshit ass clap…clap, clap, clap.
