It’s always great to see old friends get some shine. Mario Desa and I used to trade back and forth drawing skate deck graphics and then graffiti from middle school through high school. His skills were always on point and blew me out of the water. He’s been tattooing now for awhile (at Great Lakes Tattoo) but just worked with 1xRun to drop a brand new print and as to be expected, it’s dope. Scoop it up quick cuz it’s on the cheap and in an edition of only 50 (as of this writing half have already been sold).

Get yours, here.

Writer Highlight Special: R.I.P. To Nekst http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/12/writer-highlight-special-r-i-p-to-nekst/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=writer-highlight-special-r-i-p-to-nekst http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/12/writer-highlight-special-r-i-p-to-nekst/#comments Mon, 24 Dec 2012 18:13:39 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=2539 The graffiti world has lost another king, another too young king. I saw something on the internet a couple days ago but waited to believe anything until I talked to someone who actually knew. I didn’t know him personally but it also seemed like there would always be newer and more epic Nekst pieces popping up. He will always be remembered not only as a prolific bomber but for his fair share of pieces and freights and trackside rollers as well. Everything got hit. And got hit BIG.

All I can say is that hopefully in his life and death, there’s a lesson for all. Go big while you got it and live to keep getting it.

This first pic is from a piece done when I was working across the street on the Bowery and the first time I really opened up to him being a major player in doing big things, and doing them in very insanely high profile spots.

Golfing The Length Of Detroit http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/07/golfing-the-length-of-detroit-freakonomic-video/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=golfing-the-length-of-detroit-freakonomic-video http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/07/golfing-the-length-of-detroit-freakonomic-video/#comments Fri, 20 Jul 2012 20:19:04 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=1166 Stephen Dubner posted this video, about a reporter (Charlie LeDuff) who literally golfs the length of Detroit, on the Freakonomics blog and asks-

“Is it a) one of the most interesting pieces of reporting you’ll ever see? b) a kind of cultural criticism that almost never shows up in mainstream journalism? c) a golfing adventure that even the most adventuresome golfers have never considered?

Yes.”

Detroit is such a great, interesting piece of America and it’s continuously on the precipice of renaissance or mad max thunderdome-ness. This video is an ingenious, wacky call (plea) to greatness.

His letter styles and color combos are so versatile and numerous yet he still completely hones his own style. Props to a true style master.
