Writer Highlight Special: R.I.P. To Nekst http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/12/writer-highlight-special-r-i-p-to-nekst/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=writer-highlight-special-r-i-p-to-nekst http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/12/writer-highlight-special-r-i-p-to-nekst/#comments Mon, 24 Dec 2012 18:13:39 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=2539 The graffiti world has lost another king, another too young king. I saw something on the internet a couple days ago but waited to believe anything until I talked to someone who actually knew. I didn’t know him personally but it also seemed like there would always be newer and more epic Nekst pieces popping up. He will always be remembered not only as a prolific bomber but for his fair share of pieces and freights and trackside rollers as well. Everything got hit. And got hit BIG.

All I can say is that hopefully in his life and death, there’s a lesson for all. Go big while you got it and live to keep getting it.

This first pic is from a piece done when I was working across the street on the Bowery and the first time I really opened up to him being a major player in doing big things, and doing them in very insanely high profile spots.

Dave Kinsey Opening @ Joshua Liner Gallery http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/12/dave-kinsey-opening-joshua-liner-gallery/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=dave-kinsey-opening-joshua-liner-gallery http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/12/dave-kinsey-opening-joshua-liner-gallery/#comments Wed, 12 Dec 2012 23:48:48 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=2487

Dave Kinsey was pretty hot on the graffiti/street art/blah blah scene a few years ago with his gestural portraits with blasts of color (similar/different from Doze Green). His style was pretty instantly recognizable for better or worse, it was great but I was also unsure how he’d progress and push it further. He’s been seemingly laying low for awhile but now he’s back with an opening thursday, December 13th at the Joshua Liner Gallery in nyc. FecalFace has a little sneak peak and Kinsey’s new work looks kinetically awesome, it’s great to see he’s still putting out such dynamic work. Check out more @ FecalFace.

Put Blame Where Blame Is Due http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/11/put-blame-where-blame-is-due/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=put-blame-where-blame-is-due http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/11/put-blame-where-blame-is-due/#comments Sat, 10 Nov 2012 20:27:09 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=2245 Hurricane Sandy Building Collapse 2012 NYC 3793

Photo from Brechtbug on Flickr

Here’s my rant about this building that we’ve all seen and heard so much of; I find it irresponsible to put the blame on Sandy for this. It needs to go deeper than that, it seems obvious to me an incompetent, possibly corrupt, builder/contractor needs to be held accountable.

The facade of a building doesn’t just fall off. And by all means should it stand up to high wind and rain if up to legal code. Look at the buildings on either side of it, how is it the check cashing place’s awnings and vertical sign are still in tack? All the window units for air conditioning? The restaurant canopy?

It just makes me sad that this has gotten so much face time as an example of Sandy’s destruction when there is so, so, so much worse, still, and so much more directly as a result of the storm.

The city needs to investigate and prosecute the rightful party. There are more than enough slumlords in nyc and will continue to be unless they are held liable.

Actually reminds me of a really great novel I recently read, The Tower, that is a fictional account of the building of a skyscraper (re: the towers) in which corners are cut to save on contractor expenses and the ensuing madness as a result. As drab as that sounds its actually insanely fantastic and incredibly, eerily foretelling of events that led to the attack on the WTC (even though it was written in the ’70s). It also has some of the best, witty back-and-forth dialogue I’ve read in a really long time. I digress.

(Also, big ups to kenz and who ever did that roller piece, -ress, lots of exposure for that spot, haha.)

BaoHaus X Sophia Chang Art Collabo http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/10/baohaus-x-sophia-chang-art-collabo/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=baohaus-x-sophia-chang-art-collabo http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/10/baohaus-x-sophia-chang-art-collabo/#comments Fri, 05 Oct 2012 16:41:46 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=1702 Atmosphere and an appeal to the senses are everything next to taste when it comes to a restaurant and BaoHaus has got it on lock (yes this also applies to dingy hole in the walls, you know that adds to the experience). Not only does their in house playlist consist of classic hip hop from the 80′s to the naughts (classic doesn’t gotta mean old) which they post online but they also take care of your sense of sight while taking care of your sense of taste.

Enter their art collabo with Sophia Chang. She tackles the Bun Bao experience with a perfect combination of cute and hardcore, taking the bun and spittin out  a hip hop pun. I’ll let her work speak for itself…with assistance by the lyrics of Action Bronson, Tribe Called Quest, Camron, Juelz Santana, and more.

“Our families came on boats, but now we on a space ship, fuck with us.”

King Brown Magazine Release Party & Art Show http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/07/king-brown-magazine-release-party-art-show/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=king-brown-magazine-release-party-art-show http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/07/king-brown-magazine-release-party-art-show/#comments Thu, 26 Jul 2012 18:59:16 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=1192 If you’re in nyc today you gotta go down to KlugHaus Gallery (curated by Melissa McCaig-Welles and John Leo) in Chinatown and check this party out. Mike Giant is going to painting a mural, there’s going to be skating and a best trick competition. And a gang of dope artists.

And New York is lucky to get this party. King Brown Magazine is a high quality art zine/book coming straight outta Australia. Boooooom. Featured artists: Morning Breath, Mike Giant, Andy Jenkins, Greg Lamarche, Chris Cycle, Dave Kinsey, “Grotesk” aka Kimou Meyer, Stefan Marx, Kevin Lyons, Raza Uno aka Max Vogel, Zach Malfa-Kowalski, Steve Gourlay, Jay Howell, Ben Horton

For the full press release…

“We are pleased to announce the official launch and exhibition of Kingbrown Magazine, Edition #8, co-curated and designed by Morning Breath.

The exhibition will be open to the public July 26th, 2012 from 7-11pm, Klughaus Gallery: 47 Monroe Street NYC, NY

Australia’s “Kingbrown Magazine” has collaborated with curators, John Leo and Melissa McCaig-Welles to bring you a dynamic collection of skateboard inspired artwork. The exhibition will showcase some of the world’s most influential artists from members of the infamous Girl/Chocolate Art Dump, pioneers in NYC graffiti, talented illustrators, animators, art stars from Australia, sculptors, and that guy living in the NY green diamond.

Kingbrown is a distinctively designed magazine, sitting somewhere between a book, a magazine and an art zine. As a super limited edition periodical, delivered inside a hand silkscreened brown bag, sewn closed with artist stickers and posters included, Kingbrown remains different from any other publication.

Conceived in 2006 by co-creators Yok and Ian Mutch in Perth, Australia, Kingbrown’s mission was to produce a limited edition work of art, which would reach a wider audience, allowing accessibility to the public and its entirety. Each “magazine” is handcrafted and designed by some of the world’s leading innovators of photography, illustration and urban and skateboard art and design. Produced on museum quality paper, each page is a collectable item, individually sealed and packaged. Now in its 8th edition, Kingbrown has achieved worldwide success and is now launching for the first time in the US.

The term “Kingbrown” is Australian slang for a 40oz, and the magazine’s slogan “wrapped in a brown bag, just like a good 40 should”, is just as original as the artists it represents. This latest 8th edition, co-curated by the renowned collaborative, “Morning Breath”, focuses it’s topic on the visually rich artists who have influenced the world of skateboarding.

The impressive line-up includes Morning Breath, Andy Jenkins, Chris Cycle, Dave Kinsey, “Grotesk” aka Kimou Meyer, Stefan Marx, Kevin Lyons, Mike Giant, Raza Uno aka MAx Vogel, Greg Lamarche, Zach Malfa-Kowalski, Steve Gourlay, Jay Howell, and Ben Horton, all of whom have contributed to this limited 8th edition of Kingbrown Magazine.

Additional works to be included in the exhibition by the following Australian artists: Beastman, Phibs, Hiro, Reka, Kyle “Creepy” Hughes-Odgers, Meggs, Sean Morris, Yok, Sheryo, Ross Clugston, Daek, Lister, Numskull, Ian Mutch, Rone/ aka Tyrone Wright

“Thoughtfully curated, showcasing contemporary artists from around the world.” -Juxtapoz
