Leading question of course, the answer is you (if you paid anymore than $0 in taxes). The NFL is a tax exempt, not-for-profit organization.

Granted it’s not quite that cut and dry, revenue collected from merchandising and the NFL network falls under NFL Ventures which is taxed as well as the fees the NFL League Office collects from the 32 club teams. I will also be the first to admit that I am far from being an economist but there still seems to be something wrong and shady here.

The NHL and PGA also fall under this status (the MLB gave up the status in 2007 and the NBA has never been tax exempt) and the Congress’ Joint Committee on Taxation recently estimated that taxes collected from the NFL and NHL would be more than $10 million a year.

I learned about this incidentally because some members of congress are trying to levy this status as a pressure for the NFL to change the racist name of the Washington Redskins.

Gooooooo God (or Allah or Buddah or Odin or Ganesh) http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/10/gooooooo-god-or-allah-or-buddah-or-odin-or-ganesh/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=gooooooo-god-or-allah-or-buddah-or-odin-or-ganesh http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/10/gooooooo-god-or-allah-or-buddah-or-odin-or-ganesh/#comments Fri, 19 Oct 2012 18:41:23 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=1838 So cheerleaders are allowed to show Bible quotes on banners during football games at public schools. What if they were instead showing quotes from the Quran or Bhagavad Gita? Would Rick Perry have defended the right to show those?
Since the case has been decided in favor of Bible quotes I’ve made my list of quotes I’d like to see on banners at future events.

  • “Now behold, I have two daughters who have not had relations with man; please let me bring them out to you, and do to them whatever you like; only do nothing to these men, inasmuch as they have come under the shelter of my roof.” Genesis 19:8
  • “Everything in the waters that has not fins and scales is detestable to you.” Leviticus 11:12
  • “You shall not round off the side-growth of your heads nor harm the edges of your beard.”Leviticus 19:27

And lastly because I think it is especially appropriate for cheerleaders:
“Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments.”Timothy 2:9

Put your suggestions for Bible quotes you’d like to see on banners in the comments.
