wang-yue-tree-hole-paintings-6

Here’s something for a monday morning that, while being cute and adorable, is hard to scoff at. Wang Yue has taken to creating her art in the knots and tree holes around Shijiazhuang, capital city of Hebei Province. While art will always have a place on canvas, I think the culture as a whole gets elevated when it’s pushed forward and presented “outside of the box.” To me, technical skill has become less and less of a primary concern and creativity has really taken over. Granted you still gotta have some skills but we’ve already seen what the Masters have done and there’s plenty of people on the photorealistic tip. Wang Yue’s creativity is something I can actually feel.

It’d be really funny if she became as popular as Banksy and people started digging up the trees like they do with ripping his stencils off of walls. Then there could be a war between art thieves and the tree hugger army. I digress.

Unintended Street Art Collaboration Storytelling http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/02/unintended-street-art-collaboration-storytelling/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=unintended-street-art-collaboration-storytelling http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2013/02/unintended-street-art-collaboration-storytelling/#comments Mon, 18 Feb 2013 21:51:56 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=3024 If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Unbeknownst to the buff, they were providing a canvas and being part of an unwilling street art collaboration, “…and so a strange harmony was found between two opposing forces.”

Hawaiian Choe-phie http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/10/david-choe-in-hawaii-mural-buffed/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=david-choe-in-hawaii-mural-buffed http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/10/david-choe-in-hawaii-mural-buffed/#comments Mon, 15 Oct 2012 15:22:40 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=1764 I know these pics are from a bit ago but nonetheless they’re worth a revisit. David Choe remains and continues to be a true artist. That dude is fearless and seemingly immune to failure cuz even his presumed failures have more heart and more energy in them than most people’s entire lives.

Apparently, after painting the following mural on a Sunday the owner had a change of heart and buffed it by Tuesday. Had they been smart they would have chopped up the wall, sold it at auction, and retired millionaires. Anyway, check for a few more flicks after the jump. Big ups to the Hawaiians that decorated the then buffed wall with signs and spray paint of thank you and apology. And of course, follow Choe’s always entertaining Blawg (images are from Choe’s site).

But alas Hawaii he did some other art (and play) while there.

Co-opted and Commodified http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/10/co-opted-and-commodified/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=co-opted-and-commodified http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/10/co-opted-and-commodified/#comments Sun, 14 Oct 2012 17:07:41 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=1761 I’m going to call this out and say this looks like a corporate stunt, looking to mooch publicity off of the “controversy” of “street art” (all quotes specifically intended).

I personally approve of making dough off of anything. Especially street art. Co-opt to the max. But I’m also pretty broke and would just like the money.

[ed. note- just realized this is outside a gallery in Paris. Same thing, all of the above still applies.]

Nick Stern Brings Banksy To Life http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/08/nick-stern-brings-banksy-to-life/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=nick-stern-brings-banksy-to-life http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/08/nick-stern-brings-banksy-to-life/#comments Wed, 01 Aug 2012 21:03:48 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=1263 Most artists take a scene from the world and then recreate it through drawing, painting, etc. (landscapes, figure drawings). Nick Stern strikes genius in approaching this in a vice versa fashion, taking the art of Bansky and recreating in real life through his photographic series You Are Not Bansky. Banksy is fun. Banksy and Nick Stern is funner (Just like Arrested Development’s live action re-creation of Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam).

King Brown Magazine Release Party & Art Show http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/07/king-brown-magazine-release-party-art-show/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=king-brown-magazine-release-party-art-show http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/07/king-brown-magazine-release-party-art-show/#comments Thu, 26 Jul 2012 18:59:16 +0000 http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=1192 If you’re in nyc today you gotta go down to KlugHaus Gallery (curated by Melissa McCaig-Welles and John Leo) in Chinatown and check this party out. Mike Giant is going to painting a mural, there’s going to be skating and a best trick competition. And a gang of dope artists.

And New York is lucky to get this party. King Brown Magazine is a high quality art zine/book coming straight outta Australia. Boooooom. Featured artists: Morning Breath, Mike Giant, Andy Jenkins, Greg Lamarche, Chris Cycle, Dave Kinsey, “Grotesk” aka Kimou Meyer, Stefan Marx, Kevin Lyons, Raza Uno aka Max Vogel, Zach Malfa-Kowalski, Steve Gourlay, Jay Howell, Ben Horton

For the full press release…

“We are pleased to announce the official launch and exhibition of Kingbrown Magazine, Edition #8, co-curated and designed by Morning Breath.

The exhibition will be open to the public July 26th, 2012 from 7-11pm, Klughaus Gallery: 47 Monroe Street NYC, NY

Australia’s “Kingbrown Magazine” has collaborated with curators, John Leo and Melissa McCaig-Welles to bring you a dynamic collection of skateboard inspired artwork. The exhibition will showcase some of the world’s most influential artists from members of the infamous Girl/Chocolate Art Dump, pioneers in NYC graffiti, talented illustrators, animators, art stars from Australia, sculptors, and that guy living in the NY green diamond.

Kingbrown is a distinctively designed magazine, sitting somewhere between a book, a magazine and an art zine. As a super limited edition periodical, delivered inside a hand silkscreened brown bag, sewn closed with artist stickers and posters included, Kingbrown remains different from any other publication.

Conceived in 2006 by co-creators Yok and Ian Mutch in Perth, Australia, Kingbrown’s mission was to produce a limited edition work of art, which would reach a wider audience, allowing accessibility to the public and its entirety. Each “magazine” is handcrafted and designed by some of the world’s leading innovators of photography, illustration and urban and skateboard art and design. Produced on museum quality paper, each page is a collectable item, individually sealed and packaged. Now in its 8th edition, Kingbrown has achieved worldwide success and is now launching for the first time in the US.

The term “Kingbrown” is Australian slang for a 40oz, and the magazine’s slogan “wrapped in a brown bag, just like a good 40 should”, is just as original as the artists it represents. This latest 8th edition, co-curated by the renowned collaborative, “Morning Breath”, focuses it’s topic on the visually rich artists who have influenced the world of skateboarding.

The impressive line-up includes Morning Breath, Andy Jenkins, Chris Cycle, Dave Kinsey, “Grotesk” aka Kimou Meyer, Stefan Marx, Kevin Lyons, Mike Giant, Raza Uno aka MAx Vogel, Greg Lamarche, Zach Malfa-Kowalski, Steve Gourlay, Jay Howell, and Ben Horton, all of whom have contributed to this limited 8th edition of Kingbrown Magazine.

Additional works to be included in the exhibition by the following Australian artists: Beastman, Phibs, Hiro, Reka, Kyle “Creepy” Hughes-Odgers, Meggs, Sean Morris, Yok, Sheryo, Ross Clugston, Daek, Lister, Numskull, Ian Mutch, Rone/ aka Tyrone Wright

Weapon of Mass Instruction Art Car http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/04/weapon-of-mass-instruction-art-car/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=weapon-of-mass-instruction-art-car http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/04/weapon-of-mass-instruction-art-car/#comments Wed, 18 Apr 2012 05:01:20 +0000 https://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=221 Sometimes people have crazy ideas. Sometimes people have lots of drive. Rarely someone has both. When I come across things like this I actually start to believe we can, as individuals or as a group, really change lives and make living livable. Awesome.

From MakeZine.com-

“Raul Lemesoff, an Argentine art-car artist, has taken a 1979 Ford Falcon that used to belong to the Argentine armed forces and turned into a ‘Weapon of Mass Instruction.’ Armed with 900 or so books Lemesoff travels the streets of Buenos Aires and beyond offering free books to all. He sees his ‘Weapon of Mass Instruction’ as a “contribution to peace through literature.”

Common Folk Stands With Their Hoods Up in Solidarity http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/03/common-folk-stands-with-their-hoods-up-in-solidarity/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=common-folk-stands-with-their-hoods-up-in-solidarity http://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/2012/03/common-folk-stands-with-their-hoods-up-in-solidarity/#comments Tue, 27 Mar 2012 04:14:15 +0000 https://commonfolkcollective.com/blog/?p=60

This is for Trayvon Martin. I didn’t know him. I don’t know the man that shot and killed him. I don’t know exactly what happened and no one ever will. Regardless, this teenager is dead. And it’s ashamedly not really anything new.

When people with guns make bad choices there’s no turning back. None.

I’ve gotten my ass beat down, badly. But guess what, I healed. And I would take a beat down again and again and again and never would I be justified in taking someone else’s life.

Recently in Slinger, WI a 20yr old, Bo Morrison, was also shot and killed when he ran from a underage drinking party to hide from the police on a neighbors enclosed back porch. The homeowner went out on the porch and shot him. Obviously situations like this are never cut and dry. I’m all for protecting your home and family but there’s smart ways to do so and shooting to kill is not justified unless you are in immediate, imminent, absolute danger.

To keep it real, bad choices were probably made by all parties involved but in no way should either of these young men had to pay with their lives.

Nice knock off of Bushmills. Kind of funny it was actually found on Bedford Ave. in Williamsburg though. But yea, I guess that’s me since I was a non-native new yorker living in Bushwick. I aint mad. Boom.
