Adidas put up a pic of the new Jeremy Scott designed shoes on their facebook and soon after canceled their release for later this summer. Apparently there were quite a few cries of racism claiming the shoes call to mind the shackles of slaves. Jeremy Scott says they were inspired by My Pet Monster and that all his designs are “inspired by cartoons, toys & my childhood.”
I say “eh.” If someone is gonna wear those or any other Jeremy Scott designed shoes, that’s on them. I know better, I could never pull off a pair. I also think a lot more emphasis should be placed on the slave like conditions of many shoe companies themselves rather than the toy-like shackle design. Just sayin. Calling the shoes ‘racist’ is also narrow minded thinking, perhaps ‘inhumane’ would be more appropriate if anything considering slavery has affected all creeds, color, and race.
