Geneseo’s “Automatic Music Can Be Fun”

Preparing myself for the whatever-whatever that is the annual Grammy Awards, I came across a nice little story. A coupla guys who call their band Geneseo, after the upstate New York town they hail from (not far from a couple places I call “home”), were up for a Grammy for album art, against David Bowie, Jay Z, Metallica. They’re not a household name yet, but they partnered with a couple of local visual artists, Annie Stoll and Brian Gunert of White Bicycle to create a unique-sounding package with scratch-off surfaces. Looks like Geneseo got together an Indiegogo campaign to travel to the awards ceremony.

The article that I learned a lot of this from was from The Daily News, a local-to-Geneseo newspaper.

Excellent work, all.

Dual Monitor Support with a Mac Mini

This is a nerd post and it’s here because when I was looking for this information online I couldn’t find. I have a Mac mini (Late 2012 Model) It’s pretty much a stock model except that I added my own RAM to get it up to 16BGB. This is the first time I’ve bought a non-laptop computer since at least 2000 which meant the use of a single monitor. As a software developer this is unacceptable so I started looking around at monitors and I came across the ASUS PB278Q 27″. With the WQHD resolution of 2560×1440 I was pretty excited for this bad boy to arrive. My other monitor is a 24″ DELL S2409W which runs at 1920×1080.

The answer I couldn’t find online is no matter what connectors I used HDMI to DVI, Mini Display Port to DVI, Mini Display Port to HDMI, HDMI to HDMI. I couldn’t get the ASUS to work at anything above 1920×1080 depriving me of 1612800 glorious pixels. As turns out you can’t get anything above 1920×1080 unless you are using Mini Display Port to Display Port cable.

The TL;DR version is you can use two monitors at 1920×1080 one via the HDMI and one via the Mini Display Port with a HDMI out or DVI out. If you want to go 2560×1440 you can only do so via Mini Display to Display Port and the other monitor via HDMI will only support 1920×1080.

Tuesday Forecast…Whaaa?

How come no one on my counsel informed me it was Tuesday yesterday?! Blasted. Ah well, I have everyone to blame but myself.

Straight forward Hip Hop: the a-bit-out-there Memphis rapper Cities Aviv. Snowgoons, from across the pond featuring about every rapper to make underground, teenage boy fans wake up with a weird unexpected sticky substance in their drawers.

Left field, Instrumental based Electronica, Hip Hop, Boom Bip, what have you: Bibio, Actress, Clouded Slum.

The rest: some nice bubble gum, indie, girl group Habibi; Singer/Songwriter, Patsy Cline-esque Eleni Mandell (with some clarinet thrown in for good measure), A Plus from Hiero Crew goes a bit experimental with a heavily EDM based record as Compound 7; classic Dum Dum Girls return; a surprise like in the not known to me until now, Hospitality; Supreme Cuts (also from across the pond) get down with a little Electronic, sample, R&B, EDM, Soul, Pop, Funk; and when it’s time to chill, Gem Club.

Keep Your Head Down

You are young, and have the world before you; STOOP as you go through it, and you will miss many hard thumps.
