Open Letter to Ann Coulter

I know this is from a couple of weeks ago but it deserves revisiting. And John Franklin Stephens just did a great spot on NPR. Coulter got her ass publicly handed to her (and hopefully she sticks her head back up there and leaves it there). I take that back. I feel bad even writing that in respect to the spirit of Mr. Stephens, his letter is written with such a heavy hand of positivity and killing ‘em with kindness. It’s awesome.

The tweet from Ann Coulter- “I highly approve of Romney’s decision to be kind and gentle to the retard.”

Part of John Franklin Stephens’s letter, from the Special Olympics Blog-

“I thought first of asking whether you meant to describe the President as someone who was bullied as a child by people like you, but rose above it to find a way to succeed in life as many of my fellow Special Olympians have.

Then I wondered if you meant to describe him as someone who has to struggle to be thoughtful about everything he says, as everyone else races from one snarkey sound bite to the next.

Finally, I wondered if you meant to degrade him as someone who is likely to receive bad health care, live in low grade housing with very little income and still manages to see life as a wonderful gift . . .Well, Ms. Coulter, you, and society, need to learn that being compared to people like me should be considered a badge of honor.

No one overcomes more than we do and still loves life so much.

Come join us someday at Special Olympics.  See if you can walk away with your heart unchanged.”

Read the whole letter.

Paleo Diet

According to my Facebook stream the “paleo diet” is the latest trend of shortcuts people are taking towards healthy eating. The concept is you eat like people did during the Paleolithic Era. This is all fine and dandy but I have issues with it. The first being that I have to constantly hear about it. The second is that while you are eating like our evolutionary ancestors you aren’t gathering your food in the same way. Were you to say, spend a whole day hunting a deer and then killing it an preparing it with stone tools you’d be much more authentic.

Additionally I watched this video produced by the BBC and featuring a scientist from my alma mata that explores how our diet may have helped us evolve to have larger brains. (The video is an hour but totally worth it)

It’s 40 Ounce Friday

It’s been a long week. The members of the Common Folk Collective are fans of drinking, it’s a hobby and a pastime. Back in the day when Thos had a pager, and we wanted to celebrate we’d each get a 40oz of Old English and a Guinness Extra Stout and mix the unofficial drink of the Common Folk Collective. “The Black Eightball” comes from the J-Ro verse on “Keep it Pouring”

I used to drink the O.E. down to the sticker
Pour in the Guinness Stout to make it thicker
Black Eightball y'all, I'm still drinkin after last call
