Heavy Rotation

The Heist [Deluxe Edition] [Explicit] [+digital booklet]. So, it took me awhile to give this a fair listen and no lies or sarcasm or cynicism I’m really digging it. And Ryan Lewis gets super dope extra bonus points for his production skills.

The Money Recordings, Bettye Swann is a good go to for some classic r&b/doowop.

Back From The Brink: Pre-Revolution Psychedelic Rock From Iran: 1973-1979, Now Again records unearths some really great recordings from Kourosh.

Humpday Helper: Lotus “Monks”

Lotus is a diverse live band featuring synths, horns, strings and they’ve teamed up with a host of rappers for an anticipated collaboration project. And it’s free. FREE, people (well, you can name your price from 0-trillion).

Features Doodlebug (Digable Planets), Lyrics Born, Mr. Lif, Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), and more. It’s also worthy of noting that Monks was mastered by thee Daddy Kev.

Tuesday Forecast

I am definitely hands down geeked about three albums: J-Zone, Janelle Monae, and King Krule. Dopeness cubed. The new Stepkids album should be promising some more good weird/pop/r&b/funk on the Stonesthrow label. Planet Asia also comes again with a new project, fingers crossed for this one since although being one of my favorite emcee’s his stuff varies from spectacular to ehh, the little I’ve heard is very hopeful though. Trombone Shorty who came up in the jazz/brass bands of Nola drops a bit of a guitar heavy release but manages to make it a lot better than that sounds. Throw in some German instrumental hip hop, mindless guilty pleasures, what you expect from DFA, some sappy goo, and it’s a wrap.

For J-Zone I highly suggest going straight to the source-

Post.NotPost.Post.Consistency.

I’m about to make a huge, international affecting admission: we here at the Common Folk Collective have not always been the best with the consistency of our posts. I know, revelatory. But as most of you probably realize we really are just common folk and along with that get our asses kicked by the norm and mundane of everyday life. Changing jobs, marriage proposals, moves back home from abroad, working at 4:30am, deaths, having to cancel a European tour cuz TSA rejects your passport, having to live at home with mom, hangovers, sometimes just being straight up lazy, getting those bills paid, etc., etc., etc.

So, with that, we really are going to try and do better. Cuz we love ya’ll.

Some Control Over Email

I read a blog post today about changes made to Gmail’s interface and how they stress out the author. This is why for my email I alway use IMAP and a native mail client, that and since I have several accounts to check I don’t have to have 6 browser windows open at all times. SAAS is great until you don’t like the changes they make.
