Matchbook Paintings- Joseph Martinez

joseph martinez

Matchbooks have for one reason or another always been kind of an odd, kitschy collectors item. I suppose they’re like little mementos of all the bars/restaurants your seedy ass has patronized, like little trophies. Well, if you’re in SF you can go check out some matchbooks that are literally works of art. Public Barber Salon (571 Geary) is hosting a show by Joseph Martinez called A Little Piece of the Bay that is all oil paintings done on the insides of matchbooks. On top of that they’re of heroes and friends of his such as Sam FloresMike Giant, and Barry McGee. Collectables for sure.

Unintended Street Art Collaboration Storytelling

If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Unbeknownst to the buff, they were providing a canvas and being part of an unwilling street art collaboration, “…and so a strange harmony was found between two opposing forces.”
