Song of the Week— Colin Munroe ft. Joell Ortiz “Piano Lessons”

Alright, so this is a little on the feel-good, cheesy tip but I’m still diggin it. Although, the video just reminds me I can never be a star cuz there are no home video recordings of me as a child.

Shout out to all the kids that quite their piano lessons.

Song of the Week – Fight the Youth – Fishbone

In honor of all of the young voters out there who chose a more progressive government, the 18-29 demographic really rocked it. The song of the week is Fisbhone’s “Fight the Youth”

Congratulations President Obama.

(ed. note: There is also a really great documentary on Fishbone that came out recently, they really are trailblazers that deserve all the respect they get, Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone.)

Song of the Week- Danny Brown “Witit”

This is a Danny Brown video so you already know it’s going to be on some other ish. This time he brings the scary future to our face pen & pixel style (I know you haven’t forgot about the ingenious design team behind the No Limit album covers!!!!).

I’m also realizing that anyone under 21 probably doesn’t get the Monica Lewinsky reference.

Song of the Week – P.O.S. – Fuck Your Stuff

As Thos pointed out P.O.S. just released “We Don’t Even Live Here”
and already he’s got a Common Folk Collective song of the week. “Fuck Your Stuff” has the first reference to Christopher Hitchens I’ve heard in a rap song, or any song for that matter.

The chorus sums it up nicely:
Listen , eh, my whole crew’s on some shit
Scuffing up your Nikes
Spittin’ on your whip
Kicking out your DJ
Rock it, then we dip
We don’t watch the replay

Song of the Week – The Coup “The Guillotine”

If you haven’t heard of The Coup you should educate yourself ASAP. The Coup is arguably the best political rap group out, imagine Dead Prez with a touch of humor that adds levity to Boots Riley’s grim messages. With the addition of a live band, they keep your head bobbing.

So it is with much pleasure that I share with you the song of the week “The Guillotine” from the yet to be released “Sorry to Bother You” (which Boots has this to say about it, “It’s as if Rick James, The Pixies, Ohio Players, The Clash, Salman Rushdie, Richard Pryor, and me went in the studio drunk off Sailor Jerry Rum (don’t do it) and made a baby named “Sorry To Bother You”).

Warning contains the lyrics:
“They got the TV- we got the truth
They own the judges and we got the proof
We got hella people- they got helicopters
They got the bombs and we got the, we got the
We got the guillotine
We got the guillotine, you better run”

Enjoy the Wizard of Oz homage.

As an added bonus The Coup has a Kickstarter campaign for a tour bus with some amazing rewards for donations, such as producing your album or spitting sixteen bars on your album or having dinner or a drink with you.
