More Mourning

It has not been a good month for the lives of talented musicians, Chuck Brown and Donna Summer both have joined MCA. I never had the pleasure of seeing Donna Summer live. I was lucky enough to see Chuck Brown open for The Roots a few years ago at Constitution Hall where rocked the show and upstaged The Roots which, I would have though impossible. RIP, Donna and Chuck the world will sorely miss you.

Song of the Week – De La Soul Held Down

I could probably do a whole year of De La Soul songs, but I’m going with “Held Down” as it was off of AOI:Bionix which a lot of people probably slept on and it features Cee Lo when he was “that guy from Goodie Mob” before his Gnarls Barkley fame.

Warning contains the lyrics:
And when I'm watchin the news, and my daughter walks in
and chose to ask, "Why were all those people on the floor
sleepin, covered in red?" I told her
that they were lookin for God, but found religion instead

Front of the Crates- Odd(isee) Edition Free Ep Download!

In lieu of there being much of anything officially coming out today except for Killer Mike (all produced by El-P (company flow), whaa?), Oddisee is dropping a free EP of remixes! Trying to promo up for his upcoming release (“People Hear What They See” out June 12th), “Odd Renditions” gives us some re-working of Marvin Gaye, Bon Iver, and others. Definitely all around Common Folk approved with big thumbs up. It’s also a feature on the music go to site, Stereogum.

From his blog, Oddisee says “In a perfect world, you’d hear ‘Odd Renditions’, love it & say…

‘Man this is really good & free! I should buy this guys album!’”

Do it. Download here. And check out the remix video of Marvin Gaye’s “Peculiar” below.

Monday Maxim

"Comin up short of the green guys
And I might start slangin bean pies
Or the bootleg t-shirt of the month
With "U Can't Touch This" on the front
 I'm bout to get rich
Cause life ain't nuttin but money and fuck a bitch"

Ice Cube “Steady Mobbin”

You always gotta have your side hustle, whether the economy is good or bad. And embrace that creative, d.i.y. side of things, we don’t have to rely on anyone else cuz we can do it for ourselves.

Writer Highlight- Atak

Atak is an all around balanced writer. From walls to freights to rooftops to anything with a writable surface. He gets handy with the whole slue of weaponry; aerosol, markers, fire extinguishers . . . padlocks. Like I said he’s a writer’s writer. Carnage zine (by Sabeth718) just did their premier issue on him and his partner-in-crime Hert. But it sold out with a quickness.
