Humpday Helper: The African Elijah Wood You Never Knew

Being an ardent music fan and a fan of Elijah Wood since his Wilfred days (where’s more episodes?!), I never put the two together. Luckily for us OkayPlayer/OkayAfrica did cuz apparently he is a fairly legit crate digger, specializing in Africa and Psych from France and Brazil, and he even started a record label Simian records. Finding all this out, OkayAfrica recruited him for their Africa In Your Earbuds series.

Proof is in the pudding.

Tuesday Forecast

First things first, Cibo Matto! It’s been 15 years, and while Miho Hatori and Yuka Honda have been busy in the meantime, it makes this boy very happy to see them come back together.

Hip Hop: Galapagos4 is the little indie Chicago label the could, putting out consistent, quality, creative Hip Hop. They just put out another Qwazaar & Batsauce project. SelfJupiter (Freestyle Fellowship) also reappears with a new album as Burgundy Fats. Buck 65 drops another quirky, not-in-a-box Bike For Three! one.

Electronic, Atmospheric, Geeky, Synthesizer: Illum Sphere and Poemss are two groups I’m unfamiliar with but am a bit excited about. And I’m really excited about Tinariwen, a band that had to leave Mali and recorded this in the states, just go listen. For the synth fans and geeks, Solvent’s album is music from the documentary I Dream of Wires.

Singer/Songwriter, Quirky, Electro-pop, Indie, Jazz, Blues, Psychedelic: Nostalgia 77 and Zara Macfarlane are on some contemporary but throwback Jazz and Blues that I’m really digging. Same for Temples with their 60s, Psych sound. There’s also some more moody, creative, singer/songwriter type joints that aren’t usually my thing but hey, good music is good music.

There’s also a pretty great Punk compilation that focuses on across the pond, the first one did the same for stateside.

George Zimmerman X DMX Fight Canceled

As much as I would enjoy seeing George Zimmerman get his ass whooped (regardless of whether you feel his killing Trayvon Martin was justified or not, he is a despicable human being for his antics post trial), I have to say I am relieved this debacle has been canceled.

I also don’t believe the promoter’s altruistic reasoning for a second, especially since he was the one who promoted this shit show in the first place (and released confirmation of the fight on the eve of Trayvon’s birthday. Really?!?!).

Read more, including the promoter’s response, on the notOkayPlayer.com post.

Bama Love Soul Provides Some Proper Monday Music Listening

Monday. I actually have off today but it’s still Monday. Thankfully DJ Rhadu provides a pretty dope, chill mix of future soul, electronica, r&b, funk, and hip hop that feels just right as the icicles drip outside my window. The new single by J-Live, “Money Matters”, makes it worth it all on it’s own.

And What Does a Real Man Look Like?

Michael Sam is set to be the first openly gay player in the NFL next fall, assuming the Four Horsemen don’t appear and he doesn’t get drafted. Sam was SEC Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All American in 2013.

So, I begrudgingly give him whole-hearted support and admiration. Why begrudgingly? Because it’s sad that it still takes so much courage simply to admit who you are, it should be a non-issue. Hopefully more and more people like Sam will keep bravely standing up for themselves and almost as important, that people will continue to support him and others until sexual orientation is accepted across the board.
