If you’re at all a fan of Jill Scott and like hip hop this is a great mixtape. From MelloMusicGroup, “In 2011 Baltimore emcee Substantial was facing the possibility of cancer. He ended up having preventive surgery and while laid up, decided to start working on a tribute album to Jill Scott, one of his biggest influences. It was his was of staying busy while healing, and at the same time to give people their roses while they could still smell them…Even the cover art was a labor of love, hand drawn by Substantial himself.”

I was raised on the beats of the Golden Age of Hip-Hop and Giving Up (Prod by Joc Max) off of the album “Quarter Life Crisis” by Quartermaine took me back to my youth. Cop a copy of the vinyl from Redefinition Records and support real underground independent hip-hop.
Tuesday Forecast
Excited for the new Cadence Weapon, based on previous releases this should be another “forward thinking, left field” hip hop release. Got a good Ron Carter (staple of sampling) re-release in there too.
Tuesday Forecast- Front of the Crates
This week the obvious stand out seems to be EL-P’s new one Cancer 4 Cure. I’m also looking forward to a listen to Casual’s (Hieroglyphics) new one. And for you Madlib heads, a special box set of all 13 Medicine Show cd’s, honestly though I’ll probably pass on that cuz he just went overkill and I lost interest. Finally, Bruce Haack Remixes. Definitely.
Front of the Crates- Odd(isee) Edition Free Ep Download!
In lieu of there being much of anything officially coming out today except for Killer Mike (all produced by El-P (company flow), whaa?), Oddisee is dropping a free EP of remixes! Trying to promo up for his upcoming release (“People Hear What They See” out June 12th), “Odd Renditions” gives us some re-working of Marvin Gaye, Bon Iver, and others. Definitely all around Common Folk approved with big thumbs up. It’s also a feature on the music go to site, Stereogum.
From his blog, Oddisee says “In a perfect world, you’d hear ‘Odd Renditions’, love it & say…
‘Man this is really good & free! I should buy this guys album!’”
Do it. Download here. And check out the remix video of Marvin Gaye’s “Peculiar” below.

Well, here it is. Do with it what you like. I’ll be giving a listen before I buy. But the Big K.r.i.t. re-issue and Lazer Sword are promising. And the Detroit funk has got to be good.
