Tuesday Forecast: 07.29.14

This week all hip hop eyes should probably land on the new Shabazz Palaces, Kev Brown, and Planet Asia. For those that don’t know Shabazz Palaces is in part comprised of Ishmael aka Butterfly from Digable Planets (now based in Seattle). Kev Brown has been doing his blue collar work ethic thing for awhile. And Planet Asia, while I still think his first ep is by far the best, is still dropping gems when teamed up with the right producer.

In the non hip hop world I think Land Observation’s The Grand Tour takes the cake. This is a travel record, guitar orchestrated beautiful instrumentals for zoning out or zoning in. Then there’s the zany-ness of Wastoid, psych-rock of Wildest Dream, and some crooning from Nicola Conte.

Push buttons. Out.

Hip Hop

Skipped last week but this week actually has a pretty damn decent bumper crop for hip hop of the not pop-radio, guns and drugs type. Some straight up hip hop and some left of field stuff. And you know Kool Keith is always good for at least an entertaining listen.

Other

Soul, glitch-pop(?), guitars, weirdness, chill electro-funk, and 80s synth. It’s all here.

Skateboard Deck Shapes

For those who came into the skate world post 80′s, you’ve probably only skated the equilateral, utilitarian shaped deck. While great for function it lacks in form. This is an awesome, nostalgic chart showing how crazy and different board shapes used to be. All I used to do in middle school was draw shapes and graphics for my pro model I was so sure would get put out one day. Shout out to Mario Desa, tattoo artist extraordinaire, for passing our designs back and forth during class.

Front of the Crates- Tuesday Forecast

Here’s what I’m looking to check out this tuesday. Definitely looking forward to the Blockhead release and the O.C. & Apollo Brown.
