Song of the Week- Jean Grae, “Kill Screen”

Moody, deep, and dark. Jean Grae shoots, directs, edits, conceives, births, crushes, destroys, kills, and does everything else her own goddamn self on her latest video. This is hip hop from the underground, as in Edgar Allen Poe was resurrected from his 6 foot deep grave, given a sex change, and started emceeing. Always great to see video as art and not just a cheap promo, the way it should be.

Cake or Death really needs to come out now. But in the meantime, free download of her mixtape, Cookies or Comas here.

Fred Pharaoh- “Just For Fun” Download

This upcoming Harlem spitta flows over some great jazzy, boom-bap production on his debut mixtape, “Just For Fun” (which is more like an actual album than just a mixtape). Kind of reminds me of Lupe Fiasco when he was first coming up, he’s got enigmatic energy and that hunger in his voice.

Tuesday Forecast (It’s A Big One)

Damn. Big one this week. Scroll through and check ‘em out. Besides the obvious, Nas and Frank Ocean, I’m really digging Motel Mari and Murs did a collabo with a graphic novel! Then there’s the Alchemist, Piano Overlord (Prefuse 73), Com Truise, and on and on…

Song of the Week – Raekwon “Can It Be All So Simple (Remix)”

One of the first and one of the best Wu-Tang member solo albums hands down is “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx” from Raekwon the Chef and while it has many great tracks like “Ice Cream” I’m choosing “Can it Be All So Simple (Remix)” It has several great lines like:
I should've stayed in Job Corp, but now I'm a outlaw
and
Dedicated to the Gods and Earths
Dedicated to babies who came feet first
Dedicated to Up North and down state
