“Hip Hop On Trial” Public Debate

For all you intellectual Hip Hop heads, there’s a huge global public debate going down in London today. But its also going to be using Google+ Hangouts and streamed live on Youtube. Sounds a bit gimmicky and marketing-ish but when you check the list of participants you can’t really go wrong: ?uestlove, Q-tip, Krs-One, Dream Hampton, P.J. O’Rourke, an advisor to the UK Prime Minister on youth & crime, and a bunch of others. Oh yea, Jesse Jackson, of course he’s involved too. I’m just wondering where Davey D is and why he’s not involved?

Song of the Week- Quakers “Fitta Happier”

More Brass bands in Hip Hop. They did this one for my birthday (tomorrow the 24th). Really, they did it just for me. This is what happens when you give portishead producers a 35 piece hip hop collective band and various emcee’s.

Monday Maxim- Get Yours

"I said you're the type of girl that I can't pass over
Give me one chance and I'll bend your ass over
Just call me the plumber at the end of the night
Cause a nigga like me'll lay plenty of pipe
She didn't get offended it was splendid to me
Cause mister nice guy is what I pretended to be
I guess I just wine her and dine her
And by the end of the night I'll be behind her
Waxing that ass like Rain Dance"

Ice Cube, “I’m Only Out For One Thang” Amerikkka’s Most Wanted

Sometimes its fine for two consensual adults to just get buckwild without a lot of baggage. And men, it really is splendid when an independent woman doesn’t get offended but two things: 1) don’t push it and 2) don’t ever underestimate or be surprised by a women’s right/want to hit it just as much as you.

Front of the Crates- Odd(isee) Edition Free Ep Download!

In lieu of there being much of anything officially coming out today except for Killer Mike (all produced by El-P (company flow), whaa?), Oddisee is dropping a free EP of remixes! Trying to promo up for his upcoming release (“People Hear What They See” out June 12th), “Odd Renditions” gives us some re-working of Marvin Gaye, Bon Iver, and others. Definitely all around Common Folk approved with big thumbs up. It’s also a feature on the music go to site, Stereogum.

From his blog, Oddisee says “In a perfect world, you’d hear ‘Odd Renditions’, love it & say…

‘Man this is really good & free! I should buy this guys album!’”

Do it. Download here. And check out the remix video of Marvin Gaye’s “Peculiar” below.

Monday Maxim

"Comin up short of the green guys
And I might start slangin bean pies
Or the bootleg t-shirt of the month
With "U Can't Touch This" on the front
 I'm bout to get rich
Cause life ain't nuttin but money and fuck a bitch"

Ice Cube “Steady Mobbin”

You always gotta have your side hustle, whether the economy is good or bad. And embrace that creative, d.i.y. side of things, we don’t have to rely on anyone else cuz we can do it for ourselves.

Song of the Week- Organized Konfusion “Stress”

Pharaohe Monch & Prince Po together as Organized Konfusion are a force. Stress: Extinction Agenda is easily, hands down one of my top albums of all time. Plain/Simple. Concept, flow, lyrics, street, smart.

Warning to record execs, wack emcee’s, and pay-to-play radio stations, lyrics include:

"Why do you choose to mimic these wack MC's?
Why do you choose to listen to R&B?
Why must you believe somethin is fat
Just because it's played on the radio, 20 times per day?"
